Sam wins major national title

Local lad, Sam Hughes has stormed to victory in the most prestigious individual junior angling championship, the Browning Youth Masters fished at Moorlands Farm fishery, near Kidderminster in the West Midlands The competition started months ago with over 1,000 fishing the qualifying rounds. Sam, from Berry Hill, won his way through to the final this weekend where he beat over 50 of the best young anglers in the country taking over 93lbs of carp. The constant pressure of the crowd coupled with Sky Sports cameras did not phase the 14 year old as he battled his way to the win. Sky Sports commentator, Keith Arthur sat behind Sam for much of the match, even asking him questions as he was landing fish! The young star acquitted himself excellently whilst under the intense spotlight, and his Ross-on-Wye sponsors, Wye Angling, were thrilled at the news. Dennis and Kevin who own and run the business truly believe Sam has the potential to go all the way to the top at senior level. As Dennis Sherwood put it; “he has poise and professionalism way beyond his years, qualities that will stand him in great shape coupled with his undoubted talent as an angler.” His mum Tracy, and dad, Chris could not sleep with the excitement of it all, but young Sam just took it in his stride. Whilst he has lots of self-confidence, Sam is also very modest so there is no fear of his latest success going to his head, although his beaming smile has been very much in evidence since the win. The win was terrific in itself, but the prize package of £1500 of Browning fishing tackle complete with a full year of sponsorship will really make a difference to Sam’s progress.
